Child Support Scheme

The aim of the Child Support Scheme is to provide for the continued maintenance and support for the children of the relationship. The Scheme also aims to minimise parental conflict over financial arrangements. It is important to keep these objectives in mind when approaching the issue of child support payments.

Much like every other aspect of family law, child support can be an emotive and fragile topic to broach. At New Way Lawyers, our experienced child support lawyers will guide you through the process of either coming to an agreement with your spouse about payment of – or applying for – child support. Our approach is always with the core understanding that the familial unit should be preserved to the greatest extent possible. We do not believe in an adversarial approach and will handle your matter with dignity, compassion, and respect.

You Are Not Alone

We understand that child support can make an enormous difference to single parents who are grappling not only with the emotional implications of separation but also the added financial obligations that come with it. We aim to make this process as smooth as possible for you.

Child support payments can occur in a number of different ways including by way of:

  • Lump sum payments;
  • Periodic payments;
  • Non-periodic payments.

How can we help?

A child support lawyer can provide advice to you regarding the above process, including:

To determine the approach most suitable to you, call us for a free consultation with one of our experienced solicitors.

Reaching an agreement

Unless the parties are able to reach an agreement, the Department of Human Services will calculate the amount of child support owed to the primary carer. Whenever possible it is best to reach agreement about child support arrangements.

We can assist you both in determining the type and amount of child support relevant to your situation and attempting to reach an agreement in this regard.
